Legally Blind

Meg will be attending Headstart preschool in the fall. I have been traveling down to Provo with her to do all the enrollment stuff. Last Wednesday was the "Headstart Screening". When she went to the eye screening, they took a picture of her eyes and then they could tell how they focused by looking at the glare that came of their eyes in the picture. They said that we needed to take her to the eye doctor because one of her eyes wasn't focusing right. We were both worried and stressed about it. We both really felt like maybe she had a lazy eye and that she would need to wear a patch for a few weeks and that would be it.
Yesterday was her eye appointment. The doctor had her cover one eye and tell him what pictures she saw. She said she couldn't see anything. When she covered the other eye she could see everything perfectly. Well after all the other tests were run, he told us that she is so farsighted in her right eye that she can neither see things far away or up close. He said that her left eye is more than perfect vision and that it is clear that she has just been using that eye to see everything that she has needed to. He said that she is legally blind in her right eye. We were speechless. We still can't believe it. It breaks our hearts to think of Meg having to deal with glasses at such a young age.
We tried on glasses forever trying to find ones that really looked cute. Nothing seemed quite good enough so we had them order in some other ones for her to try. Once those come in she will start wearing the glasses, but will have to wear an eye patch on her good eye (left) to make her bad eye start working. So he said for the first few days she really won't be able to see much at all, but then it should start improving. She will have to wear the patch anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months. After that it should just be the glasses, but she has to wear them any time she is awake. It is still such a shock to us. I guess her peripheral vision was really thrown off with all of this. The optometrist said that this is hereditary (even though we can't figure out where from) and that she has most likely had it since she was born. That kind of explains why she has been so clutzy and why we can't get her to catch a ball very good. We performed our own little test when we got home last night. Brian held a book up across the room and we had her take turns covering her eyes and telling us what she saw. She really couldn't see anything with that eye. It is just mind boggling that she has always been like this and we didn't know. We will post pictures when we get the glasses. We have tried to be 100% excited for her and acted like she was so lucky to get to wear glasses. Hopefully that will last and she will keep being excited about it.

Poor Meg. But glasses aren't that bad. She will get used to them. I am glad you caught it before she went to school. That might have made things really hard for her. Good luck with the eye patch thing, I don't think my kids would do a very good job with that.

My sister, Melissa, started wearing glasses at age three, and she absolutley loved them. She felt special and wanted to wear them all of the time. Hopefully, Meg will love them, too. I am wondering if you will have to glue the eyepatch to her head though. I can't wait to see how she looks in her new glasses. She'll be adorable.

It does explain a lot about all of her falling down, tripping, etc. Poor Meg. She's been working on just one eye for all this time. I'm glad they finally were able to catch it. If you hadn't put her in Headstart you might not have caught it until kindergarten. I'm sure she'll be so cute with glasses. We miss you.

Oh cute little Meg. It's a blessing you found out sooner than later. I had glasses when I went to kindergarten because of a lazy eye. It's not so bad.

Heather, you are the most amazing, resourceful mother I have ever known. I can't believe all the stuff you can make. I'm so impressed. Happy birthday Meg!
